I BLOG FOR A CAUSE
Pongalipaka village in Andhra Pradesh, India, with a population of 1,632 people, located about 48
km from city of Hyderabad, has been declared a "tobacco-free" village. Pongalipaka village achieved this unique feat on
the special occasion of World No Tobacco Day, May 31, 2012. Pongalipaka village's mission to become tobacco free was a joint
initiative of the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) and Nature.
This super cool initiative was started last year in Aug, 2011. Under the program, all the shops selling tobacco in the village were asked to stop selling tobacco and tobacco related products. To everyone's surprise all the villagers took the initiative really seriously, and as a result the village has attained this very unique feat.
The same village, Pongalipaka, had also bagged "Nirmal Gram Puraskar" in 2007 for maintaining good hygiene and sanitation.
No doubt, people of Pongalipaka village set high standards not only for themselves but also for all the villages in the country. iBlog4aCause congratulates all the people involved in this marvelous effort !!
By the way, if you still smoking the cigarette, now is the time to throw it away. Com'on you can do it !!
